Sayedee’s defence witness dies

Shamsul Alam Talukdar, 74, passed away at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Medical University (BSMMU) hospital early on Saturday.

He was suffering from old age related ailments including diabetes, relatives said.

Talukdar was convener of Kazi Zafar Ahmed-led Jatiya Party’s Bagerhat district unit.

He was also founding general secretary of BNP’s Bagerhat district chapter.

He was admitted to BSMMU hospital three days ago, said Sardar Abu Bakkar, a party activist.

Talukdar’s relatives headed for Bagerhat with his body in the morning. He would be buried next to a mosque adjacent to Shoronkhola Degree College.

The freedom fighter was second-in-command in the Sundarbans sub sector during the War of Independence.

His testifying for Sayedee on Sept 2, 2012 in the International Crimes Tribunal caused a furore in Bagerhat.

Talukdar said he had turned up to testify for the Jamaat leader at the request of Sayedee’s third son Masud Bin Sayedee.

Talukdar had been involved with politics as a student.

He joined National Awami Party headed by Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhasani in 1969 and contested the provisional election in 1970.

The freedom fighter joined BNP in 1978. He retired as general secretary from the party’s Bagerhat unit in 2008.

Recently he joined the Kazi Zafar Ahmed-led Jatiya Party faction.
