Savar municipality mayor Md Refatullah has been suspended on charge of failing to take proper action after several cracks had developed in Rana Plaza.
The mayor, president of Savar municipality unit of BNP, was also charged for irregularities in approving the design of the nine-storey building that collapsed on April 24, trapping several thousand people, mostly garment workers, inside it.
Abu Alam Md Shahid Khan, secretary of Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) ministry, confirmed the suspension order, reported Bangla daily Prothom Alo on Thursday.
The death toll of the building collapse now stands 429.
The ministry also issued a show cause notice to the mayor to explain his stance regarding the allegations.
