Samsung to build third terminal of Dhaka airport by 2023
Samsung Construction & Trading (C&T) Corporation, the construction unit of Samsung Group, has won the project of building Terminal 3 of the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
The company will build the new terminal on the south side of the airport’s main terminal at an estimated cost of Tk21,399 crore. Of this, the government will provide Tk5,000 crore, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) will fund the rest, read a press release.
To upscale the passenger and cargo capacity of the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on December 28, 2019, inaugurated the construction work of its Terminal 3.
Samsung C&T Corporation received a budget of Tk5,000 crore for the project expected to be completed by 2023.
About 20 million passengers will be able to travel through the airport annually after the completion of the terminal.
The new international passenger terminal is set to have a floor area of around 2.25 million square feet. Whereas the exiting two terminals have space of around one million square feet altogether.
The Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport’s expansion will increase its annual passenger management capacity from eight million to around 20 million, and cargo capacity from 200,000 tonnes to 500,000 tonnes.
It will also be possible to monitor all the operational work of the new terminal from a single control room.
The project, with an estimated cost of Tk13,610.47 crore, got the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council’s go-ahead signal on October 24, 2017.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh revised the estimated project cost to about Tk21,399 crore.
Located in Dhaka’s 1981acres of land, the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport began operations in 1980. Now it has one domestic terminal and two international ones.
As part of the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport’s expansion project, showed a Jica study, its passenger management capacity is expected to cross the maximum limit of 8 million per year.
The airport already managed 6.5 million passengers in 2016 with the current rate of 7 percent growth.
The cargo volume of the airport already outstripped its capacity in 2015 and it now deals with over 250,000 tonnes of cargoes against the capacity of 200,000 tonnes, said the Jica study.
The 3,200 metre-long main runway of the airport was upgraded to asphalt surface in 2013; the average aircraft movement per day on the runway is around 190 flights.
The airport also features a multi-storey car parking area and a VIP terminal.
