Salaries and perks of constitutional positions almost doubled

The cabinet on Monday approved a proposals raising the salaries and perks of all those who hold constitutional positions from the president to members of parliament by almost 91 per cent.
The cabinet endorsed draft amendments to The President’s (Remuneration and Privileges) Act, The Prime Minister’s (Remuneration and Privileges) Act, Ministers, Ministers of State and Deputy Ministers (Remuneration and Privileges) Act, Speaker and Deputy Speaker’s (Remuneration and Privileges) Act, Members of Parliament (Remuneration and Allowances) Act, and Supreme Court Judges (Remuneration and Privileges) Act.
The prime minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the regular meeting of the cabinet at Bangladesh secretariat.
The proposed amendment hikes the president’s salary from Tk 61,200 to Tk 1.20 lakh and that of the prime minister from Tk 58,600 to Tk 1.15 lakh. Salaries of ministers would rise to Tk Tk 1.05 lakh from Tk 53,100.
It also proposes salary of the speaker to be raised to Tk 1.12 lakh from Tk 57,200 and of the chief justice’s from Tk 56,000 to Tk 1.10 lakh, said cabinet secretary M Mosharraf Hossain.
Salary of deputy speaker would rise to Tk Tk 1.05 lakh from Tk 53,100.
Salaries of Appellate Division judges would rise to Tk 1,05,00 from Tk 53,100 and of High Court Division judges to Tk 95,000 from Tk 49,000.
The move came weeks after the incumbent government almost doubled the pay for around 14 lakh civil servants working in the country with retrospective effect from July this year.
