Rajshahi Metropolitan Police commissioner Mahbubur Rahman was withdrawn on Monday, two days after the killing Rajshahi University sociology professor AKM Shafiul Islam, while protests against the murder continued for the third consecutive day on university campuses across the country.
The home ministry transferred the Mahbubur Rahman to Dhaka Metropolitan Police as an additional police commissioner, said a circular.
Dhaka’s additional police commissioner Md Shamsuddin will take over the charge of Rajshahi police commissioner, according to the circular.
The transfers were made amidst criticisms that the law and order in Rajshahi had been deteriorated during the tenure of Mahbubur as the police commission and that the police failed to crack the motive of the killing of Shafiul.
Eleven people were sent to jail on Monday in the case of killing Shafiul, who was hacked to death on his way home on Saturday afternoon.
The police, however, said that they had so far detained 34 people in the case filed by Rajshahi University
registrar Entajul Haque with Motihar police station on Sunday night against some unnamed people.
Victim’s son Soumin Sahrid Javin said that Islamist militants were behind the killing. Earlier, a facebook group, Ansar al Islam Bangladesh-2, opened few hours after the killing, claimed responsibility for killing the sociology teacher.
Motihar police officer-in-charge Alamgir Hossain, also the investigation officer of the case, denied any comment about the motive of the killing and whether the arrested people had any political affiliation.
Mahbubur Rahman just before his transfer told New Age that they were working on several possible motives behind the killing and got important information.
Rajshahi chief metropolitan magistrate Mizanur Rahman sent 11 people — Rajshahi Islamia College principal Humayun Kabir and lecturer Mosharraf Hossain, and Abdullah Al Mahmud, Fazlul Haque, Moshiur Rahman, Hasibur Rahman, Arif, Sagor, Jinnah, Rejaul Karim and Saifuddin — to jail.
The police produced the 11 before the court seeking them to be remanded in custody for interrogation for 10 days. The court kept the hearing in the petition pending.

No classes and exams were held at Rajshahi University on Monday as Rajshahi University Teachers Association boycotted the classes and exams for the second consecutive day protesting against the murder, said association general secretary Pranab Kumar Pandey.
Hundreds of teachers and students, wearing black badges, formed a half-an-hour human chain in front of the vice-chancellor’s residence in the morning.
RU Sangskritik Jote and Bangladesh Chhatra League brought out processions and they threatened of tougher programmes if the law enforcement agencies failed to file a charge-sheet of the killing in 15 days.
Teachers and students of sociology department also brought out a procession on the campus.
Teachers and students of Dhaka University, Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Barisal University and Khulna University staged demonstrations including human chains and processions demanding immediate arrest and punishment of the killers of Shafiul Islam.
