A Dhaka court on Monday awarded the husband of Rajshahi University student Wahida Sifat 10 years’ of rigorous imprisonment in a case filed over the death of his wife.
The court acquitted three accused from the case.
Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 Judge Sayeed Ahmed passed the verdict on Monday afternoon.
The court also fined Sifat’s husband Mohammad Asif Prisley Tk 10,000, in default of which he has to suffer six months more in jail.
Farzana Banu, mother of Sifat, expressed her dissatisfaction over the verdict.
`We will go to appeal at Supreme Court’, she told New Age.
Wahida Sifat, 27, former student of Mass Communication and Journalism Department of Rajshahi University, was found dead at her in-law’s house in Rajshahi city on March 29 in 2015.
Shifat’s husband Mohammad Asif Prisley, father and mother in-laws Mohammad Ramzan and Nanmun Nahar Nojli, and a Rajshahi Medical College forensic expert Zobaidur Rahman stand accused in the case. Prisley is now behind bars while the others are out on bail.
Sifat’s uncle filed a case with Rajshahi Rajpara police. The case filed under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act claims that she was murdered for dowry.
Later, on 12 July 2016, the case was shifted from Rajshahi to Dhaka’s Speedy Trial Tribunal 3 following a petition of the plaintiff.
