A Dhaka court on Tuesday denied bail to Awami League MP Golam Maula Rony in a case involving assault on 2 TV journalists.
Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court’s Acting Judge Md Aktaruzzman rejected Rony’s plea after hearing it.
Kabir Hossain represented Rony, while Anisul Haque stood for the plaintiff, private channel Independent TV’s Assistant Manager Yunus Ali.
Kabir in the plea said earlier the magistrate’s court rejected bail to Rony without giving him the chance to defend himself. He was not given any notice before denying bail.
Kabir also alleged that the neutrality of investigation was being compromised as the same police official was looking into two cases filed against Rony.
Meanwhile, lawyer Anisul Haque said Rony, Awami League’s Patuakhali-3 MP, had threatened the plaintiff again after securing bail once.
Two journalists – reporter Imtiaz Momin Sony and cameraman Mohsin Mukul – of the private Independent TV came under attack at Rony’s Meherba Plaza office on Topkhana Road on July 20 when they had gone there to interview the MP for their investigative programme ‘Talash’.
The TV management filed a case against him for ‘murderous assault’ at Shahbagh Police Station.
The following day Rony secured bail from the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in the case on July 21.
But another Dhaka court scrapped the bail and ordered his arrest on July 25 after the TV channel lodged a general diary claiming Rony had threatened them.
He was arrested from Dhaka’s Badda area that day barely two hours after the court cancelled his bail and presented in court.
The court sent him jail rejecting his bail plea.
Rony on July 28 pleaded for bail to the Judges Court. But as the court on Tuesday rejected his plea, he will be behind the bars for some time more.
He was elected MP from the Patuakhali seat in the 2008 national polls. Rony has earlier been accused of beating up journalists in his area.
Prior to his arrest on July 25, Rony had said in a statement: “It seems I am a victim of the situation. I take the full responsibility for my unrestrained behaviour.”

Mr. Rony seems to have been a greenhorn in politics. He should have known that however cajolery he does to his top boss, the ‘conflict of interest’ can’t allow any impediment. Unwittingly maybe, he stepped on the tail of a much, much venomous snake and therefore, he’s destined to suffer. He should have thought that those the very powerful FM did not dare to ‘touch’, must not forgive him for his ‘audacity’. So when he will come out of the cage is very uncertain.
