Workers of the readymade garment industry will now be able to open bank accounts with just Tk 100.
The initiative is to have the workers receive their salaries through bank accounts, the central bank said in a circular on Tuesday.
The circular said apparel workers will need their national IDs and the IDs issued to them by their employing companies and Tk 100 to open account.
The regulation to hold minimum balance or any fees/charge will not apply to these accounts. If there is a shortage of cheque books, transaction may take place with the vouchers.
The Bangladesh Bank had directed bank accounts to be opened with Tk 10 for farmers, freedom fighters, school-goers and for old-age allowances within the social safety net programme.
A total of 10.3 million accounts of this kind were opened until Sept 15, according to the Bangladesh Bank data.
