The government has brought Readymade Garment (RMG) industry under the Ministry of Textiles and Jute for smooth management and effective coordination, an official said on Thursday.

“The decision to this effect was taken at an inter- ministerial meeting on May 5,” the official told BSS.

At present, garments makers approach ministry of commerce and sometimes ministries of industries and labour when they run into problem as they don’t know which particular ministry is responsible for looking after the sector’s issues.

The garment industry accounts for over 80 percent of country’s export earnings and a major contributor to country’s $115 billion GDP.

The second meeting of the Standing Committee on Ministry of Jute and Textiles was held at the parliament building on Thursday.

Committee chairman Saber Hossain Chowdhury presided over meeting.

Committee members Textiles and Jute Minister Mohammad Imaj Uddin Pramanik, State Minister for the ministry Mirza Azam, Begum Munnujan Sufian, Mohammad Ekramul Karim Chowdhury and Sabina Akhter Tuhin joined the meeting.

The meeting recommended for placing the total employment in the ministry, records on contribution of jute and textiles to the GDP and its export income before the next meeting, said an official handout.

Issues of selling of assets owned by the Bangladesh Jute Corporation (BJC), raising tax on polythene and using jute bag came up for discussion in the meeting.

High officials of the ministry and JS Secretariat also attended the meeting.
