Leaders of the alliance of Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) and Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD), who are taking part in the three-day ‘Teesta March’, on Friday observed that rivers would remain just a memory to the future generation if justified shares of common rivers’ water are not ensured.
The two-party alliance jointly launched their ‘Teesta March’ following a rally in front of the National Press Club on Thursday afternoon. They organised the programme demanding equal share of waters of 54 common rivers, including the Teesta, flowing from India.
While addressing different wayside rallies on their way to Rangpur from Sirajganj on the second day, the left-leaning party leaders also said river waters not only help grow crops but also contribute to building habitat, society and civilisation.
Although the country was liberated, the pending problems of common rivers could not be resolved, they said, underscoring the need for creating a new surge in the country to resolve the issue.
They also called on the government to take steps to get justified share of Teesta waters from the Indian government.
The alliance of CPB-BSD has started their second day ‘Teesta March’ towards Bogra after holding a rally in Sirajganj on Friday morning.
The rally was held at Swadhinata Square in the district town and then they started for Bogra at about 10 am. The marchers also held roadside short rallies at Sirajganj Station Road and Gurtka Beltala.
In Sirajgonj, the rally was addressed, among others by Manjurul Hasan Khan, former president of CPB, Khalekuzzaman, general secretary of BSD, Syed Abu Zafar Ahmed, general secretary of CPB and BSD leader Bazlur Rahman Kiron.
In Bogra, the rally was held at Satmatha of Bogra at about 5:15 pm. BSD Bogra district coordinator Saiful Islam presided over the meeting where the left central leaders spoke, said CPB leader Ruhin Hossain Prince.
Rzzequzzaman Ratan, a central leader of BSD, said they would stay overnight in Rangpur and start for Teesta Barrage in Lalmonirhat on Saturday morning after holding a meeting in Rangpur on Saturday morning.
