The police has announced a Tk 100,000 reward for each of eight culprits identified from the video footages on the women assault incident at the Dhaka University campus during Pahela Baishakh celebrations.
Inspector general of police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque made the announcement during a press conference at the police headquarters on Sunday morning.
On 14 April, several women, including minor girls, were assaulted near Suhrawardy Udyan on the campus when they came to celebrate the Pahela Baishakh.
Liton Nandi, president of Bangladesh Chhatra Union’s Dhaka University unit, was seen fighting with that group in the footages.
Liton Nandi claimed that a woman was stripped off by the attackers at a spot beyond the reach of the camera. He eventually rescued that woman.
He said that the proctor and the police were informed, but none of them took any action over the incidents.
On 16 April, the High Court issued a suo motu over the incident.
The police chief also told the briefing that a drive against unregistered motorcycles across the country would start on 3 June.
He said a large number of unregistered motorcycles have been plying city streets and different roads across the country.
The owners have been given 15 days from Sunday to register their motorcycles or else strict actions will be taken against the unregistered motorcycles, he added.
