Restoring people’s trust in the electoral system should be the Election Commission’s topmost priority, Election Working Group (EWG), a civil society platform, said on Monday.
Countrymen have lost their faith in the present electoral system following the 10th parliamentary election held early last year, EWG members said at a press conference at the National Press Club on the day.
The platform also requested the EC to ensure equal rights for all the candidates and ensure professionalism in every aspect of the election procedure.
EWG director Abdul Alim read out a written statement at the press conference, held with the Dhaka and Chittagong city corporation elections knocking at the door.
The EWG, a platform of 28 civil society organisations, was formed in 2006 to ensure a fair electoral process.
The platform also placed their 11-point demand, including appointment of female officials for the women voters, at the press conference.
The EWG will have 46 long-term observers and a thousand volunteers on the election day in Dhaka while as many as 21 long-term observers and 700 volunteers will be there during the CCC polls, EWG also said.
Members of the organisation Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, Taleya Rahman, Kamrul Hasan, H M Noman, Harun-ur-Rashid and Binoy Krishna Mallik spoke on the occasion.
