Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury will administer oath of office to 48 women members of parliament on Sunday, five days after they were elected unopposed to fill the seats exclusively reserved for women.
The oath taking ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. in the parliament building, says a press release from parliament secretariat.
The parliament has 300 elected seats and another 50 reserved only for women. The women MPs are elected by the directed-elected lawmakers.
The election to 10th parliament was held on January 5 amid boycott by the 18-party opposition alliance led by Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
The Election Commission on Wednesday declared 48 women MPs elected unopposed in the reserved quota as they had no rival.
Nominations of two others, Sabiha Nahar and Khorshed Ara Haque, were cancelled as the returning officer found they did not pay their outstanding telephone bills at least seven days before the submission of nomination papers.
Among the women MPs, 38 are from the ruling Awami League, five from HM Ershad-led Jatiya Party, three from a coalition of 16 independent MPs and one each from Workers Party and JSD.
