Holy Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic lunar calendar in which Muslims are meant to fast from dawn to dusk, begins on Monday amid the soaring prices of essentials.

Ramadan is a time of restraint and austerity, and also a time for inner reflection, devotion to the Almighty Allah and self-control.

During the holy month, all government, semi-government and autonomous and semi-autonomous organisations will follow a new office from Monday as announced by the government.

All these offices will remain open from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm with a 15-minute prayer break from 1:15 pm to 1:30 pm during the month.

As Muslims concentrate on some specific items like sugar, gram, brinjal, pulse, date and meat for consumption during the fasting month, the prices of those have started soaring despite the government’s announcement to keep the market under control.

The Commerce Ministry at a meeting on Sunday decided to take stern actions against those who will try to artificially raise the prices of the Ramadan essentials and destabilise the market.

The meeting was told that 14 teams of the ministry are conducting drives in the city to keep the markets stable and the prices under control.

Amid the growing concern over the use of dangerous chemicals, including formalin, in food items, mainly Iftar items, 10 mobile teams of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) are conducting drives to check the adulteration of Iftar and other food items during the Ramadan.

On the occasion of the holy month, President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia greeted the Muslims of the country and elsewhere in the world.

In his message, the President termed Ramadan the month of self-purification as it brings a rare opportunity for the Muslims to get close to the Almighty Allah and having his forgiveness.

The Prime Minister, in her message, congratulated the Muslims on the occasion of Ramadan and said it’s an opportunity for purifying the souls and getting close to the Almighty Allah through the learning of making sacrifice.

She urged all to establish peace, fraternity and harmony, being imbued with the teaching of Ramadan shunning greed, hatred, indiscipline and friction.

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia also urged people to maintain peace in society refraining from the acts of injustice, jealousy, hatred and violence.
