Protests flare up at Bangladesh Bank

More than a hundred officials of Bangladesh Bank (BB) stormed the governor’s office today, forcing several deputy governors to leave the office, a rare incident in the history of Bangladesh Bank, the country’s central bank.

They demonstrated in front of Bangladesh Bank head office in Dhaka’s Motijheel, demanding resignations of all contractual posts of the central bank — deputy governors, banking advisor and governor.

Around 200 BB officials came to the office of the deputy governors at around 10.30am, demanding instant resignations of them. The DG staffs then locked the office doors, they added.

The situation is “out of control”, BB Spokesperson Mezbaul Haque said.

The incident takes place just two days after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina from the post of prime minister, who also fled the country amid spiralling protests over security forces brutality and killing of over 300 people, ending a 15-year rule of Awami League she chaired.

The protestors claimed the deputy governors and governor were helping the bank looters.
