The prices of spices went up in the city’s kitchen markets over the week on the eve of Eid-ul-Azha, one of the biggest Muslim religious festivals, to be celebrated on Tuesday.
The prices of ginger, cardamom and cumin increased in the city market over the week ending Friday as the demand for the items increased before the Eid festival, traders said.
The price of ginger increased by Tk 30-Tk 40 a kilogram and the item was selling at Tk 110-Tk 150 a kg in the city market on Friday.
Cardamom price rose by Tk 200-Tk 400 a kg and the coarse variety of the item was selling at Tk 1,200 a kg while the fine variety was selling at Tk 1,800-Tk 1,900 a kg on the day.
The price of cumin increased by Tk 40-Tk 50 a kg and the item was selling at Tk 390-Tk 450 a kg in the city market on Friday.
The prices of onion and garlic remained high over the week.
Local varieties of onion were being retailed at Tk 40-Tk 45 a kg and the imported onion at Tk 30 a kg.
Local garlic was selling at Tk 160-Tk 190 a kg while the imported item was selling at Tk 200-Tk 210 a kg in the city’s kitchen markets.
The price of salt remained high and the fine quality (triple refined) packet salt was being sold at Tk 38-Tk 42 a kg while the refined item was being sold at Tk 35 a kg on Friday.
Unpacked sugar was retailing at Tk 70 a kg while the packet item was selling at Tk 75 a kg in the city.
The prices of vegetables remained unchanged over the week.
Aubergine was selling at Tk 40-Tk 60 a kg, green chilli at Tk 80-Tk 120 a kg, bitter gourds at Tk 40-Tk 50 a kg, cucumber at Tk 60 a kg, bottle gourd at Tk 40-Tk 50 a piece, okra at Tk 50 a kg and papaya at Tk 30 a kg.
Fish prices remained unchanged. Rohita was selling at Tk 200-Tk 320 a kg, Katla at Tk 200-Tk 300 a kg, Pangas at Tk 120-Tk 280 a kg, and Tilapia at Tk 120-Tk 180 a kg, depending on size and quality.
The price of broiler chicken remained unchanged and the item was selling at Tk 135-Tk 150 a kg, while the locally-bred hens were selling at Tk 350-Tk 400 a kg on Friday.
Beef was being sold at Tk 420-Tk 440 a kg while mutton was selling at Tk 600-Tk 650 a kg over the week.
The price of eggs decreased by Tk 2 a hali (four pieces) and the item was selling at Tk 30-Tk 32 a hali on Friday.
The price of bottled soya bean oil remained unchanged and a one-litre container of soya bean oil was selling at Tk 95-Tk 98, while that of a five-litre container remained unchanged at Tk 450-Tk 460 in the
city’s retail markets on Friday.
The price of unpacked soya bean oil also remained unchanged, with the fine quality of the item selling at Tk 88-Tk 90 a kg on Friday, while palm oil was selling at Tk 68-Tk 72 a kg.
The price of rice remained unchanged and the coarse variety of the item was being sold at Tk 32-Tk 34 a kg over the week.
BR-28 rice was selling at Tk 40-Tk 42 a kg, coarse variety of Miniket rice was retailing at Tk 44-Tk 46 a kg, while the fine variety was selling at Tk 48-Tk 50 a kg in the city markets on Friday. The fine variety of Najirshail rice was selling at Tk 52-Tk 54 a kg over the week.
