The Jatiya Sangsad will elect a new president on April 29, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad announced Tuesday afternoon.
The last date for submitting nomination is April 21 and for withdrawal April 24, the CEC informed at a press briefing at Election Commission Tuesday afternoon.
If there is only one contestant, the EC will announce name of the new president the same day.
The CEC made announcement on schedule for the presidential polls shortly after meeting acting Speaker Shawkat Ali.
President Zillur Rahman breathed his last on March 20 at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore where he had been undergoing treatment for critical lung infection since March 10.
A veteran politician, who celebrated his 85th birthday earlier that month, was installed as the 19th president in 2009 after Awami League was elected in the landmark December 2008 general elections.
