The government plans to provide electricity to all citizens by 2021, claiming that at present 68 percent of them has access to it, a minister has said.
Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal informed Parliament of the plans on Tuesday on behalf of State Minister for Power Nasrul Hamid Bipu while replying to a question from Naogaon-6 MP Md Israfil Alam.
Replying to another question from Narayanganj-1 MP Golam Dastagir Gazi, Kamal said the government had inked deals to set up 77 power stations since it assumed office.
These stations are expected to generate 11,509 megawatt of power.
The current daily demand of about 6,250MW is met with locally produced electricity and 500MW imported from India.
Responding to a query from Dhaka-11 MP AKM Rahmatullah, the state minister said the government had plans to convert all analogue and digital electricity meters to pre-paid meters.
Seven million pre-paid meters will be installed within the next three to five years.
