President Md Abdul Hamid has called on followers of all faiths to strengthen religious harmony in the country in the interest of national development.
He was speaking at a reception hosted by him at Bangabhaban on Tuesday on the occasion of Janmastami, the birthday of Hindu God Lord Krishna.
“Bangladesh is a country of communal harmony. The people of this country have a strong belief in unity and secularism.
We have to foster the existing brotherly and friendly relations between our religious communities for achieving progress and prosperity of the country,” said Hamid.
Taking a leaf out of Sri Krishna’s book, the president said, Lord Krishna’s incarnation was spent preaching love and in trying to eliminate hatred and injustice from society.
“He always sought ways toward the emancipation of people”, the president said.
With Religious Affairs Minister Matiur Rahman beside him, the president exchanged greetings with members of the Hindu community at the reception.
