President Abdul Hamid on Saturday asked the police to discharge their duties with neutrality and professionalism upholding human rights and democratic values.
“You must discharge your duties with neutrality and professionalism by upholding human rights and democratic values in line with the constitution,” he said adding that building an effective bridge between the police and people is the main characteristic of a democratic police system.
The President said this while addressing a programme marking the Annual Police Week-2014 at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban.
He said the police in the past showed noteworthy successes in checking militancy and now militancy is under control. “You all have to remain alert so that terrorism and militancy can’t rise anymore.”
“We need to keep in mind that in colonial police system, people and police had been in a conflicting position. It’s your duty to build up a modern, people-friendly and service-oriented police system putting behind the old ideas,” Hamid told the police,
He further said, “A special attention has to be given to the people who go to then police seeking service and help so that they can’t face harassment in any way. You specially have to be careful about woman and children. You must discharge your duties with neutrality and professionalism by upholding human rights and democratic values in line with the constitution.”
The President said that it is one of the main and sacred duties of the police to maintain peace and discipline in society by ensuring the country’s internal security, protecting public life and property, establishing the rule of law and preventing terrorism and crimes.
He went on: “The world now has turned into a global village due to globalisation. Globalisation has cast an effect also on crimes. You’ve regularly been facing new types of crimes including militancy, terrorism and cyber crimes. The use of technology in combating crimes has to be increased apart from applying traditional techniques.”
The President said all sincere members of the Bangladesh Police successfully faced the recent turbulent situation as per law by showing professionalism and patience, bringing back peace and normalcy to the public life.
State Minister for Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan, Home Ministry senior secretary CQK Mustaq Ahmed and IGP Hasan Mahmud Khondoker were, among other, present on the occasion.
