Pro-hartal elements torched at least six vehicles at different places of the city on Sunday, ahead of Monday’s countrywide daylong hartal called by Hefajat-e-Ialam.
Witnesses said a bus was set afire at Kakrail crossing around 5:20 pm while another in front of Rajarbagh Police Lines at the same time.
The hartal supporters set a bus ablaze near Basabo Buddhist Temple at about 5:35 pm and another near Bangladesh Bank at Motijheel around 5:31 pm.
Another bus was set on fire front of Mogda Petrol Pump at about 5:47 pm while a jeep near BTV Bhaban in Rampura at about 6:16 pm.
Police said the vehicles were torched in a bid to create panic among the city dwellers ahead of the shutdown to be enforced by the Islamists’ platform.
Hefajat-e-Islam Bangladesh on Saturday called the daylong countrywide hartal for Monday protesting the government obstruction to its long march programme and repression of its activists on their way to Dhaka.
