Police conducted a one-hour raid at Chittagong city office of Jamaat-e-Islami in Dewan Bazar and arrested two of the party leaders on Tuesday.
Acting on a tip-off that the activists of Jamaat and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, were holding a meeting to carry out subversive activities in the area, police raided the office, said AKM Mohiuddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of the police station.
Detained Aiyub Ali is publicity secretary of Chittagong (south) while Md Shahjahan is president of Baro Aulia Madrasa unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Jamaat, our Chittagong correspondent reported.
A team of Lohagara police led by Md Iltutmish, additional superintendent of police (Chittagong South zone), conducted the raid from 10:30am, the OC said.
The Jamaat-Shibir leaders were accused in a case filed over the death of a police constable in Lohagara upazila.
Tarek Hossain of Lohagara Police Station sustained severe injuries during a clash between Jamaat-Shibir activists and law enforcers in the upazila on February 28 following the death sentence of Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee.
The policeman succumbed to his injuries a day after the clash.
On February 28, the Jamaat-Shibir men went into berserk in several upazilas of the port city soon after Jamaat Nayeb-e-ameer Sayedee was sentenced to death for his wartime offences.
