Field-level senior police officials on Tuesday demanded that Bangladesh Police be made an independent division to bring more dynamism in the police department, reports UNB news agency.
They came up with the demand during a views-exchange meeting with home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and senior home secretary Md Mozammel Haque Khan at Rajarbagh Police Lines auditorium.
Inspector general of police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque and other top police officials were present at the meeting.
The home minister sat with the filed-level police officers as part of the Police Week 2016, which was formally inaugurated by prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday morning.
Meeting sources said the police officers also demanded quick formation of proposed ‘Counter Terrorism Bureau’ to deal with serious crimes, especially militancy, as the proposal has been under consideration of the government’s high-up for the last several years.
Wishing anonymity, a senior police official who attended the meeting said they also sought to increase the delegation of financial power of the IGP who is holding the status of senior secretary.
In response, the Home Minister assured them of considering the matter and hailed the role of the police in curbing terrorism as well as militancy.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Kamrul Ahsan drew the home minister’s attention to the shortage of police vehicles, especially prison vans, saying the policemen face risk while transporting hardcore criminals and militants from jail to court and vice versa.
In this regard, Asaduzzaman said a proposal has been lying with the public administration ministry in this regard.
