A police check-post on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway has come under attack while conducting a regular search on a bus in Comilla.
The two attackers, who the police said were operatives of banned outfit the Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), have been detained after a shootout.
The incident, a day after an attempted a bomb attack to snatch away a death row militant, has been reported from Comilla’s Chandina Upazila.
Highway police’s Sub Inspector Kamal Uddin said a ‘Shyamoli Paribahan’ bus was stopped by the police check-post on the highway at the Upazila’s Teerchar Village.
“As soon as the bus was stopped, two men came out and fired on police before exploding bombs.
“The law enforcers retaliated by opening fire and the two were nabbed while trying to flee the scene,” he told bdnews24.com.
The police officer said the two have been identified as Jashim, 30 and Hasan, 32 and that they were operatives of militant group JMB.
Comilla’s Superintendent of Police Shah Mohammad Abid Hossain has visited the spot, said SI Kamal.
