The BNP has trashed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s comment about Khaleda Zia ‘conspiring from abroad’, dubbing it ‘false and fabricated’.
Spokesperson Asaduzzaman Ripon on Friday said their party chief was in London for treatment.
“Imagine how cruel the government is when its chief makes such a false and fabricated comment against the leader of the main opposition,” he said.
Ripon urged the prime minister to desist from making such remarks against Khaleda.
On Thursday, Hasina, at a rally in Kurhigram, accused Khaleda of “burning 150 people to death” between January and March this year during the BNP-led alliance’s agitation.
The BNP-led alliance, which boycotted the parliamentary polls, has been pressing for a snap election. It enforced a continuous and violent three-month-long transport blockade across Bangladesh.
“Now, she is hatching fresh conspiracies from abroad… She is trying to tarnish Bangladesh’s image by killing the foreigners,” Hasina added.
Hasina has been blaming the BNP chief for the killing of Italian Cesare Tavella in Dhaka on Sep 28 and Japanese Kunio Hoshi in Rangpur on Oct 3.
Ripon said his party was never involved in violent politics and alleged ruling party activists were behind the arson.
He pointed out that a report by an NGO had found involvement of the ruling party-backed men with the acts of violence.
“But the government is running a propaganda against the BNP,” he said.
Ripon also protested against the prime minister’s remark that the BNP-led government did not take initiative for exchanging the enclaves.
He claimed the government of BNP founder and Bangladesh’s first military ruler Ziaur Rahman had asked India repeatedly to execute the Land Boundary Agreement.
“Khaleda Zia, too, had urged India to solve the outstanding bilateral issues during her three terms in office,” he added.
