Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday asked the Bangladesh National Women’s Cricket team to stay determined and keep up their strong performances in the international sports arena.
“Winning or losing is not the big thing. You have to stay determined,” she said while addressing a reception arranged in honour of the team becoming the Women’s T20 Asia Cup champions, at her official Ganabhaban residence.
The Tigresses recently lifted the Asia Cup trophy after beating India by three wickets in the final in Malaysia.
Describing the team as the country’s “golden girls,” the prime minister said they have proven their ability.
She added that the Tigresses have begun a new journey after clinching the title, and they will not look back.
Putting emphasis on expanding games and sports across the country, she said her government wants to select girls at the grassroots level to further strengthen the women’s cricket team.
The prime minister also said the team’s victory in the Asia Cup was the result of significant effort by the government to develop the team over the last nine years.
She added that her government has now decided to start district-wise cricket competitions to encourage more girls to participate in sports.
Sheikh Hasina also underscored the need for involving the youth in sports to ensure better health.
At the function, the Prime Minister handed a Tk2 crore cheque for the National Women Cricket Team – Tk 11 lakh for each player — as well as Tk 27 lakh to players with outstanding performances.
State Minister for Youth and Sports Biren Sikder, Bangladesh Cricket Board President Nazmul Hasan Papon and Captain of the Bangladesh National Women Cricket team Salma Khatun also spoke on the occasion.
