Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday alleged that an international conspiracy is on to drag Bangladesh backward from its march forward to progress.

“Many quarters in international arena don’t take it positively that Bangladesh moves fast towards progress and wants to stand firmly with its head sky-high. They’ve various conspiracies against Bangladesh,” she said.

Sheikh Hasina, also the President of the ruling Awami League, made the remarks in her introductory speech at a views-exchange meeting with the party grassroots leaders at her official residence Ganobhaban.

The meeting was organised to select party candidates for the next general elections.

Awami League leaders from different municipalities and upazilas of Barisal, Moulvibazar, Chuadanga, Nilphamari, Bogra, Priojpur, Habiganj and Gopalganj districts attended the meeting.

AL Advisory Council Member Suranjit Sengupta, Presidium Members Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Abdul Latif Siddiqui, Kazi Zafarullah, Nooh-Ul-Alam Lenin and Satish Chandra Roy, Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif and Abul Hasnat Abdullah were, among others, present at the meeting.

The AL chief also said that many quarters in the country also do not take it positively that AL within a short span of time has implemented numerous development programmes for the welfare of people. “They surely don’t like it,” she said.

In this connection, Hasina mentioned that opposition leader Khaleda Zia when in power had tried to kill her (Hasina) through a grenade attack on August 21, 2004.

“The opposition leader had tried to kill me through a grenade attack. In the investigation it has become clear that her cabinet members and son were involved in that attack,” Hasina said.

The Awami League chief said that carrying out killing and bomb attacks and committing corruption were the prime task of the opposition party when it was in power.

Reaffirming her firm stance to hold the next election as per the Constitution, the premier said the constitutional process should be allowed to continue uninterruptedly. “I want to clearly state that the election will be held and the country to be run as per the constitution.”

The Prime Minister mentioned that each time during the power changeover various incidents had taken place in the country. “How many times will people endure this pain, how many times will such games be played with their fate?” she questioned.

The Awami League chief categorically said that the state will be run as per the Constitution and there will be no deviation from that.

Emphasising the continuation of the constitutional process, Hasina said it needs to be firmly established that no unconstitutional force will be able to come to power in the future.

About the anti-Islam propaganda against Awami League, she said it is the AL that has carried out maximum development activities for Islam in the country.

Sheikh Hasina said if her government returns to power in the next election there will be one mosque in each district like that of the Baitul Mukarram Mosque.

“We’ve already had central mosques in some districts, this project will be expanded to all districts and later to all upazilas,” she said.

Hasina also asked the party leaders and activists to counter the false propaganda of the opposition party against AL projecting various development programmes the government has implemented for the welfare of people.

“The Almighty Allah is the source of all power; He will give the honor to whomever He wants and people are the owners of their votes,” the Awami League leader the party grassroots leaders.
