PM senses foreign plots

An international conspiracy will try to block Awami League’s return to power for another term, claimed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

“Some people may not like that we made so much progress in such a short time. There are those in the international arena who don’t want Bangladesh to stand on its feet. They will hatch all sorts of plots against us.”

The Prime Minister said this while speaking to the party’s grass-root leaders on Saturday.

About the development and spread of technology in the country, she said, “the whole world is now accessible to Internet users even at the union level.”

She urged the grass-root leaders, gathered to take part in the party’s candidate selection process, to convey this message to the people.

She urged the grass-roots leaders from Barisal metropolitan, Barisal district, Moulovibazar, Chuadanga, Nilphamari, Pirozpur, Bogra, Gopalganj and Habiganj district gathered to take part in the party’s candidate selection process, to convey this message to the people.

Sheikh Hasina spoke of the government’s many achievements including robust forex reserves, regularisation of 26,000 primary schools and distribution of free textbooks among students up to the higher secondary level.

Sheikh Hasina said, “We have scored a victory in maritime matters. Awami League will not let anyone access Bangladesh’s riches as long as it in power. BNP or others will not think twice before selling the country in exchange of (staying in) power.”

“The leader of the opposition even tried to kill me with grenades on Aug 21 of 2004.”

She again rejected outright the opposition demand for neutral caretaker government, saying, “The country will be run in accordance with its Constitution. Bangladesh has always seen unrest during change of power. How long should people endure this?”

She recalled at the meeting the barrage of rumours about casualties following a police drive to evict Hifazat-e Islam activists from their sit-in at Motijheel’s Shapla Chattar on Aug 5 this year.

“Awami League has been safeguarding Islam. The others sell it for profit.”

Hasina said BNP was lying when it said it wanted to sit for talks.

“I proposed a dialogue to the opposition chief. And what I got in return was a 48-hour ultimatum on May 4.”
