Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday inaugurated the much-awaited Elasin Bridge (Shamsul Haque Bridge) over the River Dhaleshwari on Aricha-Ghior-Doulatpur-Nagarpur-Tangail regional highway, fulfilling the long-cherished demand of the people of Tangail and Manikganj.

The 515.12-metre long and 10.25-metre wide bridge, built at a cost of Tk 94.45 crore, has connected Tangail and Manikganj, opening up the scope for increased economic activities in the two districts.

Speaking at a meeting arranged on the north side of the bridge, the Prime Minister announced the naming of the bridge after the first general secretary of Bangladesh Awami League late Shamsul Haque.

Sheikh Hasina said her government, after assuming office, has carried out massive development activities in the communication sector. “We’ve built 21,000 km roads, 7,000 bridges and 4,000 culverts over the last four years and nine months,” she said.

The Prime Minister urged people to reelect Awami League for the continuation of development and building a hunger- and poverty-free Bangladesh by 2021.

“We seek your help and vote to build Bangladesh as a middle-income country by 2021,” she added.

Reiterating her firm determination to complete the trial of war criminals, Sheikh Hasina said, “We’ve begun the trial of the 1971 culprits and started getting verdicts, and Insha Allah we’ll execute the judgment to free the nation from stigma.”

The premier also urged people to remain alert against the violent acts of BNP and Jamaat-Hefajat nexus.

Food Minister Dr M Abdur Razzaque, central AL leader Enamul Haque Shamim, assistant private secretary (APS -2) to the Prime Minister Saifuzzaman Shikhor and local MP Khandaker Abdul Baten also spoke on the occasion.

Tangail District Awami League president Alamgir Khan Menu presided over the meeting.

Earlier, the Prime Minister opened the bridge by unveiling its plaque. A munajat was offered on the occasion. She also visited the bridge riding her jeep.

With the construction of the bridge, the road communication between the north and the south of greater Mymensingh district has become easier. Some 35 lakh people of eight upazilas of Tangail are expected to be directly benefited with it.

The construction work on the bridge began in October, 2009 and completed in June this year. Roads and Highways Department implemented the project.

Messers SM Engineering and Construction built the approach road and Messers Parisha Trade System Ltd completed the river training work.
