Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that steps will be taken to strengthen the Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (Bapex).
The prime minister has expressed hope of getting more foreign investment in the petroleum sector while inaugurating several projects at the Bibiyana gas-field in Habiganj.
She inaugurated four projects and laid foundations of four others after flying to Bibiyana from Dhaka on a helicopter.
From there she went to Habiganj town where she will address a public rally at the ‘New Field’ ground and open and lay foundations of several other projects.
“Bapex must be strengthened,” Sheikh Hasina said after the ceremony in Bibiyana, “They have the skill to carry out researches on land but they have no expertise in sea, especially deep sea.
“We will provide them necessary equipments for that. We will help them in any way we can,” the prime minister said.
“Foreign investment has to be roped in. We too have to reinforce (it),” she added.
Bangladesh has gained control over a large sea area due to the end of maritime boundary disputes with India and Myanmar. The prime minister believes those areas may contain oil along with gas.
