The Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-2 on Sunday handed down death sentences to 10 people in a case filed over plotting to kill Sheikh Hasina in Gopalganj in 2000.
The judge, Mamtaj Begum, announced the verdict and sentenced nine people to 20-year imprisonment in another case filed under Explosives Act in the same incident.
Earlier, on 10 August, Mamtaj Begum fixed 20 August for delivering the verdict.
On 20 July,2000, police found two 76-kilogramme bombs in Sheikh Lutfur Rahman Government Ideal College field at Kotalipara in Gopalganj where Sheikh Hasina, on her first term as prime minister, was meant to address an election campaign rally on 22 July.
Of the 25 accused in the two cases filed over an attempted murder and explosives, Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami chief Mufti Hannan has already been executed in another case.
On 8 April 2001, Crime Investigation Department assistant superintendent of police Munshi Atiqur Rahman filed charge sheet against 10 people including Mufti Abdul Hannan.
