Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Thursday termed the placing of the national budget for fiscal year 2014-15 ‘illegal and unethical’ as it was prepared by the current ‘illegitimate government’.
“The current regime can no way be called a legitimate government. The present parliament is illegal, too. How come they place the national budget in parliament those who were not elected by people,” said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Addressing a discussion prior to placing the budget by Finance Minister AMA Muhith, the BNP spokesman further said, “Placing the budget by an unelected government is illegal and unethical act.”
Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal arranged the discussion at the National Press Club, marking the 33rd death anniversary of BNP founder and ex-president Ziaur Rahman.
Muhith placed a TK 2,50,506 crore budget for fiscal year 2014-15 in parliament in the afternoon.
This is the first budget of the current Awami League government in its second consecutive term after the January 5 election boycotted by BNP and many other registered political parties.
Earlier, the President authenticated the budget at his office in the National Parliament building. Disapproving the budget, Mirza Fakhrul said an elected government had no right to place any budget in the national parliament. “We think the elected representatives of people only can place budget in Parliament for the welfare of people and development of the country.”
Earlier on Tuesday, addressing a press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office in Dhaka, Fakhrul said they deliberately refrained from announcing any shadow budget this time as the current regime has no right to place the national budget in parliament.
