BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Tuesday warned the government that people with their full strength will resist any move to hold a lopsided election.
“People won’t accept any polls under a partisan administration and they’ll make a strong resistance if the government tries to arrange a one-sided election defying public opinion,” he said.
Mosharraf, also a former BNP minister, issued the threat while addressing a discussion arranged by Meghna Jatiyatabadi Jubo Forum, in Dhaka at BIAM auditorium.
He said a grave concern has been created in public mind following the Prime Minister’s announcement to hold a unilateral election on the pretext of following the constitution.
Mosharraf said the government will have to shoulder all the responsibilities if a confrontational situation is created due to the government’s strict stance on holding the election under a partisan government.
The BNP leader urged the government to concede to their demand for restoration of the caretaker government system for the sake of continuation of the democratic process.
Mentioning that the country’s 90 percent people have support for restoration of the caretaker government system, he said people in the elections to five city corporations also extended their support to it.
Mosharraf alleged that the current regime has destroyed all the democratic and financial institutions by indulging in widespread corruption and politicisation.
