Parliament election schedule challenged

A public interest litigation writ petition challenging the legality of the 10th parliamentary election schedule announced by the Election Commission (EC) was filed with the High Court on Saturday.

After submitting the PIL writ petition with the relevant section,

Eunus Ali Akand, a lawyer, told UNB that he would move the petition before a designated HC division bench on Sunday.

In the writ petition, the petitioner sought a rule asking the EC and other respondents to explain why the election schedule announced on November 25 should not be declared illegal.

The petitioner also prayed for a stay order on the operation of the election schedule.

The Cabinet Secretary, the Law Secretary, the Chief Election Commissioner and the Secretary to the Election Commission have been made respondents to the petition.

In the wake of a prolonged bickering by the ruling and the opposition camps over the nature of election-time administration, the EC on November 25 announced the election schedule for the 10th parliamentary polls slated for January 5, 2014.

As per the polls schedule, the deadline for submission of nomination papers is December 2 and the scrutiny of the nomination papers is on December 5 and 6. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is December 13.
