Senior Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta on Saturday questioned the silence of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia about the resolution of Pakistan parliament expressing concern over the execution of Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Mollah, a convicted war criminal.

“The whole nation had hoped that the opposition leader will take a clear stand over the highly objectionable comments in the Pakistan parliament. But we’re yet to get any version from her. We expect a clear position from her in this regard,” he said.

Suranjit, also an advisory council member of the ruling Awami League, said  this while addressing a discussion organised by ‘Amra Mujib Habo’ at the Institute of Diploma Engineers in the city.

The National Assembly of Pakistan on December 16 adopted a resolution expressing grave concern over hanging of war criminal and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdul Quader Mollah for ‘his loyalty with Pakistan during the events of 1971’.

The Awami League leader called upon BNP to take preparations for dialogue on the election to the 11th parliament turning away from implementation of Jamaat agenda.

“The 10th parliamentary polls will be held on January 5 next. We can arrange polls for the next parliament through discussions in a parliamentary meeting. So, prepare for talks on the 11th parliamentary polls shunning the path of violence,” Suranjit said.

He also called upon the BNP to sever ties with Jamaat-e-Islami. “Observe your programme, don’t implement Jamaat’s agenda,” he added.
