PADMA BRIDGE Tender by June Obaidul reiterates

Padma-Bridge

The government will float tenders by June to select bidders for constructing the Padma bridge, Communications Minister Obaidul Quader said on Thursday.

The minister told this to reporters after visiting the dilapidated Kaijuri road in Shahjadpur upazila of Sirajganj.

The minister however did not clear whether the bridge would be built with own fund, reported our correspondent in Pabna.

Earlier on May 7, Obaidul said the tenders for constructing the Padma bridge will be floated by the end of June this year

“The Bridge Division is working now for floating the tenders,” he said while talking to reporters at his ministry.

The World Band cancelled its $1.2 billion funding for the project on June 29 last year, saying it had proof of a “corruption conspiracy” involving Bangladeshi officials, executives of a Canadian firm and some individuals.

The global lender on September 21 decided to revive the loan after Bangladesh agreed to the bank’s terms and conditions.

But the government in January this year withdrew its request to the WB for the bridge loan.

Dhaka communicated the decision to the global lender, a day after the WB president in Washington said the financing for the project would not go ahead unless certain conditions were met.
