Opposition threatens to cripple country

New cabinet illegal, says Fakhrul

The BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance on Friday threatened to cripple the country if the election schedule is declared without taking measures to arrange the next parliamentary polls under a non-party government.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir issued the threat while addressing an alliance rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in the city.

“We’ve seen in the newspapers that the Election Commission will announce election schedule next week. We would like to say if the election schedule is declared without arranging the polls under a non-party government, the whole country will be paralyzed from the day it’ll be announced,” he said.

The 18-party alliance organised the rally as part of its countrywide programme protesting what it said the unconstitutional formation of the all-party government.

Pointing at Dhaka city dwellers, Fakhrul urged people to take to the streets spontaneously to topple this repressive, corrupt and autocratic government.

He said they met the President for negotiation, but the Prime Minister’s in parliament said the President permitted her to lead the election-time administration. “This has been done without taking any initiative for the talks. So, we’ve no other option. We’ll ask the Dhaka city dwellers to take to the streets to force the government to bow out,” he added.

The BNP leader alleged that the government is moving towards holding a unilateral election as the regime knows people will not vote them to power again for its misdeeds, misrule and corruption.

“Turning a blind eye to the hopes and aspirations of people, they (govt) are trying to reestablish one-party rule Baksal,” he said.

About the cabinet, the BNP leader said, “The present cabinet is illegal and it has no right to run the country.”

Branding the Election Commission headed by Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad as a government ‘puppet’, Fakhrul said the commission is formulating various laws to ensure Awami League’s return to power.

The BNP spokesperson said the 18-party alliance will stage demonstrations on Sunday in all cities, district towns and upazila headquarters across the country.

Presided over by Dhaka city unit BNP convener Sadeque Hossain Khoka, the rally was addressed, among others, by BNP standing committee members Abdul Moyeen Khan and Mirza Abbas, Jamaat central leader Abdullah Mohammad Taher, LDP secretary general Redwan Ahmed, Jagpa chief Shafiul Alam Prodhan, BNP joint secretaries general Amanullah Aman and Barkatullah Bulu, and BNP chairperson’s adviser Shamsuzzaman Dudu.

Addressing the rally, Khoka said Sheikh Hasina formed an ‘illegal cabinet’ violating the Constitution. “The dream for arranging the one-party election under the illegal cabinet will not be allowed to come true.”
