Oppn calls hartal in Ctg, Bogra, Sylhet from Saturday

 

The BNP-led 18-party alliance on Thursday called separate hartals in Chittagong, Bogra and Sylhet districts from Saturday demanding the cancellation of January-5 general election and protesting the ‘confinement’ of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.

 

The local units of the opposition will enforce 48-hour shutdowns in Chittagong and Bogra districts while a 36-hour one in Sylhet from 6am on Saturday.

 

The shutdown will end in Chittagong and Bogra at 6am on Monday while in Sylhet at 6pm on Sunday, the day when the country will go to the 10th parliamentary elections.

 

In Chittagong, city unit BNP president Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, also convener of the unit 18-party, announced the shutdown at noon.

 

In Bogra, district BNP president Saiful Islam announced the hartal while addressing a party rally in the district town around 4pm on Thursday.

 

Earlier, the local unit of the 18-party opposition alliance enforced a 36-hour hartal at 6am on Wednesday in the district protesting the ‘confinement’ of the BNP chief. The shutdown ended at 6pm today (Thursday).

 

In Sylhet, MA Haque, president of the city BNP and convener of the city unit of the 18-party alliance, announced the shutdown from a rally in the morning.
