Claiming that the country’s people will not accept the new government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, BNP on Sunday said an ominous journey of democracy began with the oath-taking of ‘illegal and immoral regime’.

In a statement, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, “Today (Sunday) is a black day for Bangladesh…a scandalous journey of dictatorship has started by burying the democratic spirit.”

The BNP spokesman said an autocratic regime having no public support has been imposed on the people of the country through a stage-managed, ridiculous, peculiar and so-called voter-less unilateral election of the grand alliance.

Claiming that the country’s 95 percent people have no support to the Hasina-led government, he said Awami League is heading towards the path of autocracy ignoring all democratic norms and principles.

“Bangladesh once again has been thrown into darkness in a planned way. The freedom and democracy-loving people of Bangladesh will neither recognise the government as legitimate one nor accept it,” said Fakhrul.

He denounced the government’s undemocratic and autocratic move to form the new government through a lopsided election.

The BNP leader urged the government to quit immediately and hand power to a non-party caretaker administration for holding a free, fair election with the participation of all.
