A Dhaka court on Sunday jailed a former police officer-in-charge (OC) for three years over torturing Abdul Kader, a Dhaka University student.
The police officer is Helal Uddin.
Dhaka additional chief metropolitan magistrate Alamgir Kabir gave the order.
The court also fined the OC Tk 10,000. In default, he has to serve three months in prison.
On 15 July 2011, police detained and tortured the DU student in the city’s Shegun Bagicha area when he was returning to his dormitory.
Police then took him to the Khilgaon police station and tortured him again.
The following day, on 16 July, police officer Helal Uddin hacked Kader in his office with a machete and filed a case against him.
Later, police filed two more cases sending him to jail.
Kader was freed after fifteen days in jail. All cases filed against him were lifted.
