BNP Dhaka city unit convenor Mirza Abbas on Thursday said Awami League must apologise to the nation for minister Abdul Latif Siddique’s anti-Islamic remarks as he did it as a ruling party ‘spokesman’.

“Latif Siddique has exposed Awami League’s sentiment as its spokesman. So not only Latif Siddique, but also all in the Awami League must apologise to the nation for the derogatory comments against the Prophet and hajj,” he told a meeting at the Jatiya Press Club.

Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) Dhaka city south unit arranged the programme demanding the release of JCD general secretary Habibur Rashid Habib.

Abbas, also a BNP standing committee member, said their party has launched its anti-government movement with action programmes on different issues of public interests and their sufferings. “This movement will take a fierce turn one day pulling down the government as they won’t leave the streets until its fall,” he warned.

The BNP leader urged the government not to instigate them to hit the streets with violent programmes.

He alleged that BNP leaders and activists are being made the victims of enforced disappearances in the government’s ill bid to subdue the opposition.

Claiming that JCD is a strong force in the country, Abbas said the government is arresting the JCD leaders and activists and implicating them in ‘false’ cases as it is afraid of the BNP student body.

He demanded the government immediately release the arrested BNP and JCD leaders, including Habib.
