Different political parties and organisations on Monday observed Shaheed Noor Hossain Day, with vows to restoring democracy in the country.
Noor Hossain, the young campaigner for democracy, was shot dead by the police at Zero Point in the capital on November 10, 1987, during autocratic Hussein Muhammad Ershad’s regime.
Leaders of different parties placed wreaths at Noor Hossain Squire, including ruling Awami League, Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Communist Party of Bangladesh, Gana Forum, Socialist Party of Bangladesh factions, Bikalpadhara Bangladesh, Democratic Left Alliance, Ganasanghati Andolan, Workers Party of Bangladesh, Samyabadi Dal, Revolutionary Workers Party of Bangladesh, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal factions and others.
Noor Hossain rattled the imagination of the nation with the slogan ‘Down with autocracy’ inscribed on his chest and ‘Let democracy be free’ on his back.
He was demonstrating against the autocratic ruler HM Ershad when the police shot him dead.
His death added momentum to the movement for democracy which eventually turned into a popular uprising that led to the fall of Ershad on December 6, 1990.
Political parties, socio-cultural organisations have been observing the day ever since as Shaheed Noor Hossain Day.
