No retreat from fight for democracy: BNP

Mirza Fakhrul addressing a discussion meeting in the capital marking the 80th anniversary of death of Ziaur RahmanBangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday called on the party workers to go ahead with the ideology of its founder Ziaur Rahman, foiling all conspiracies.

“Democracy has been sent into exile. The entire country has been made a prison. You will have to break the prison. There is no scope to retreat,” said the BNP leader while addressing a discussion in the capital.

The party organised the discussion at the Institution of Engineers, marking the anniversary of birth of the party’s founder and former president Ziaur Rahman.

In an oblique reference to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the BNP leader said he who struggled for democracy all along established one-party rule of BKSAL while a soldier, Ziaur Rahman, freed country’s democracy.

Speaking on the occasion, political scientist and former Dhaka University vice chancellor Emajuddin Ahamed said Ziaur Rahman did not grab power, but took the responsibility on 7 November, 1975.

“Not through any plot or uprising, the mass people and the soldiers have put him in power, which remained vacant,” said Emajuddin.
He said the only task of democracy-loving people at the moment is to “restore democracy in the country.”
