A 40-km tailback was created on the busy Dhaka-Chittagong Highway on Tuesday following a road crash in Daudkandi upazila, causing sufferings to thousands of homebound people ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.
Officer-in-charge of Daudkandi Highway Police Station M Mizanur Rahman said two covered vans collided head-on on the Meghna-Gomti Bridge in Daudkandi upazila around 2am, disrupting traffic on the highway.

The accident caused a 40-km tailback on both sides of the bridge from Kutumbpur of Chandina to Bhaterchar in Gazaria upazila of Munshiganj.

Though the accident-ridden vehicles were removed from the highway around 4 am, the long tailback was created in the meantime.
The situation was aggravated by haphazard and reckless driving, overtaking and illegal parking on both sides of the highway.

Huge tailbacks were also created on connecting roads – Gauripur-Homna, Gauripur-Matlab, and Gauripur-Kachua following the traffic jam on the highway.

Passengers had to go through untold sufferings due to the traffic jam.

It took passengers five hours to go a distance of only five minutes.

Many had to take their sehri with whatever they got within their reach.

Bus passenger Jamal Uddin said he got stranded on the west side of the Meghna-Gomti Bridge around 11 pm on Monday and reached Daudkandi Toll Plaza around 4:30am on Tuesday, actually a distance of only five minutes.

He said like many others he took his sehri with bread and banana.
