‘Rules to pick directors to be changed’
The government will bring no changes to the structure of the Grameen Bank (GB), Finance Minister AMA Muhith insisted Wednesday following strong criticism over the possibility of structural change in the Nobel Prize-winning microlender.
The minister however said the government will amend the GB electoral rules to pick directors.
Muhith made the comment while replying to queries of reporters after a meeting at Economic Relations Division (ERD) office in the capital.
A notification will be issued in this regard soon, he added.
“No intention to change the ownership or management style (of the Grameen Bank),” he said.
At present, the government owns 25 percentage share of the microcredit organisation and it will remain the same, he said.
About Grameen Bank founder Prof Muhammad Yunus’s allegation that the government was out to destroy the bank, the finance minister said, “This is not true. It’s came from his own head. Utterly Nonsense.”
Yunus made the allegation when the micro-credit organisation has been fighting off government control as the Grameen Bank Commission, formed earlier to review the bank’s activities, is set to recommend its future structure.
