The hearing began on September 9
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam has expressed hope that the Supreme Court will complete the hearing on the appeal filed by convicted war criminal Motiur Rahman Nizami challenging his death sentence by December 15.
The AG on Sunday said the apex court would go on a 20-day vacation from December 16. So, he hoped that the hearing would be completed by December 15.
The Appellate Division began the hearing on September 9 this year. So far, the defence has completed reading out the statements of nine out of the 20 prosecution witnesses from the paperbook.
On October 29, 2014, the International Crimes Tribunal 1 found the former minister guilty on eight of the 16 war crimes charges brought against him and handed him death penalty on four charges.
Jamaat Ameer Nizami was sentenced to death for his involvement in the killing of intellectuals by al-Badr force in Dhaka; and murder of 450 civilians and rape in Bausgari and Demra, killings of 52 people in Dhulaura, killings of 11 people and rape of three women in Karamja in Pabna.
The defence lawyers appealed in the apex court challenging the verdict on November 23 last year.
Nizami was also sentenced to death in the sensational 10-truck arms haul case.
BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Jamaat leader Ali Ahsam Mohammad Mujahid were hanged to death early Sunday for committing crimes against humanity in 1971 Liberation War.
Mahbubey yesterday expressed satisfaction over the execution of their sentences.
The top court bench, led by Chief Justice SK Sinha, has so far disposed of five war crimes appeal cases.
