NHRC chief Mizanur asks state agencies to be humane

The chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Mizanur Rahman, has asked state agencies to be humane, after the alleged torture of two public servants by policemen.

The NHRC chief was speaking at a programme organised by the National Forum for Disabled on Monday.

“Please don’t mentally torture our citizens. They can suffer post-traumatic problems or disabilities,” Rahman said.

He demanded that the government pass a law to do away with inequality and to arrange compensation for such victims.

“The State has to be compelled to compensate anyone who becomes disabled by unlawful action by any of its organisations,” the NHRC chief said.

Golam Rabbi, a communications department officer of Bangladesh Bank, was allegedly confined in a police vehicle and tortured by sub-inspector Masud Sikdar in a bid to extort money from him on the night of Jan 9 in Mohammadpur.

Rabbi is presently being treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital for injuries.

A week later, some policemen allegedly beat up Dhaka South City Corporation Inspector Bikash Chandra Das at Mirhazaribagh.
