All voters in Bangladesh will now come under the taxman’s scanner.
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is being given access to the Election Commission’s database on citizens so that it can crosscheck personal information of taxpayers and try spotting possible incongruities.
The NBR and the EC signed a memorandum of understating (MoU) on Jan 25 this year, providing the basis for this access, EC’s spokesperson Arafat Ara said.
The revenue board was given the access to the EC database from Monday.
This MoU has opened the door for exchange of information at the national level, she said.
This facility will allow the NBR to check any national ID card from the EC’s server.
It will also be able to access and use all personal information of citizens provided to the EC.
The National Identity Registration Law, 2010 does not makes it mandatory to show or submit the national ID card in order to get any public service.
But the card’s information and number are needed to receive service from any government agency including the NBR.
Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith says that income tax will be the key revenue source in the next 2013-14 fiscal.
Election Commission officials said the EC had signed similar agreement earlier with the Bangladesh Bank.
It will eventually do the same with other government and non-government institutions and organisation for public good.
