Finance Minister AMA Muhith said today the National Board of Revenue (NBR) will investigate the wealth statements of ruling Awami League MPs and former ministers if discrepancies were found between their earnings and assets.
“If there is any inconsistency between their income and the wealth they amassed, NBR will scrutinise their wealth statements,” the minister told reporters at the secretariat after submitting his tax return online.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) can also look into the matter independently, Muhith said.
The finance minister’s remarks came amid widespread media reports over the sharp rise in wealth of some Awami League lawmakers and former ministers over the past five years.
Different newspapers have been running reports on the steep increase in the wealth of several AL leaders on the basis of wealth statements submitted to the Election Commission (EC) with applications for candidacy in the January 5 polls.
Embarrassed by the revelation, the ruling party has been reportedly pressing the EC to stop making wealth statements public.
