The National Board of Revenue collected Tk 153 crore in income tax on Wednesday, the opening day of a weeklong income tax fair being organised by the revenue board throughout the country, and provided 57,047 people with services related to income tax payment, according to the official data of the NBR.
In the first day of the last year’s fair, the revenue board had got Tk 137 crore in income tax while 51,223 people had received services from taxmen.
The seven-day income tax fair across the country began on the day with participation of existing taxpayers and potential taxpayers.
At the first day, there was huge rush of taxpayers and visitors at the fair venues including that at the Officers Club in Dhaka, the fair venue for the Dhaka division, for receiving services including filing income tax returns, paying tax, receiving online taxpayers identification numbers and seeking information from the taxmen.
The NBR is arranging seven-day fair at divisional headquarters, four-day fair at district level and two-day fair at 29 upazilas. It is holding one-day mobile income tax fair at 57 upazilas (to be held any day in September 16-22).
On Wednesday, the fair began in all divisional headquarters, 13 district headquarters and five upazilas.
According to the NBR data, 14,998 taxpayers submitted their income tax returns, 2,705 people received fresh online taxpayers identification numbers while 827 existing TIN holders replaced their old traditional TINs with new e-TINs.
The fair will begin today in 27 districts including Manikganj, Tangail, Narsingdi, Kishoreganj, Sherpur, Netrakona, Jamalpur, Shariatpur, Rangamati, Moulvibazar, Noakhali, Feni, Laxmipur, Pabna, Chapainawabganj, Sirajganj, Joypurhat, Dinajpur, Lalmonirhat, Jhalkathi, Borguna, Bhola, Jessore, Satkhira, Meherpur, Chuadanga, and Jhenaidah.
The fair will also begin today in some upazilas.
At the Officers Club in Dhaka, there are 56 help desks, 41 desks for receiving income tax returns, 10 desks for e-TINs, 10 booths for other services, six booths of Sonali and Janata Bank for receiving tax, and separate booths for customs, value-added tax, savings certificates, freedom fighters, senior citizens, women and physically challenged person.
BSS adds: Industries minister Amir Hossain Amu inaugurated the fair centrally at the Officers’ Club in city’s Baily Road.
Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, Amu urged the solvent people to come forward spontaneously to submit their income tax returns.
‘If the solvent people pay their tax spontaneously, Bangladesh would become middle income country before 2021 and a developed country before 2041,’ he added.
NBR chairman Nojibur Rahman also spoke on the occasion as special guest with NBR member M Abdur Razzak in the chair.
